FLO-8 Tips

I have been donating again in the majors last Sunday so I decided to stop blowing 1-2k every weekend and focus solely on the Omaha cash games. I believe to have found a profitable strategy for the 5/10 fixed limit Omaha 8 game. At least it worked out really well so far.

It surprises me how bad the play at these higher limits is. The "dead money" is usually pretty easy to spot too. This is not the place to play a weird shortstack strategy.

Anyway, here are a few basic tips from the top of my head to improve your Omaha H/L game. The strategy is based on full ring fixed limit Omaha 8 or better cash game. Limits from 1/2 to 5/10.

- Play starting hands with a good chance for the nut low such as , , .

- Limping is perfectly fine. It will be easier for you to get rid of your hand in case you miss the flop completely.

- Stay patient. It might take a while to hit your monster but when you do, it will be well worth the wait.

- You want to be drawing to the nut low along with a decent high.

- If you flop top pair without a low draw and a good chance for the nut high, check/fold.

- There’s no point in trying to bluff your opponents. They will call.

- When you know you’re beat on the river, fold. Don’t make the call just because it’s only 6 bucks to win 100.

- Don’t fill up in the SB with garbage. You’re wasting money.

- Aces are not the nuts.

- When you flop gin, bet and raise as much as possible. Most of the time, you’re going to play multiway pots. You want to build a big pot so you make a decent profit in case you end up winning only part of it.

- Don’t be afraid of scaring your opponents away. They will call you down with all sorts of weak hands that you would never have imagined.

- Don’t slow play the nuts.

- Don’t play garbage hands like . You might flop the nuts every now and then, but you’re going to lose in the long run.

- Don’t try to steal the blinds with garbage. It won’t work. Forget it.

- Don’t re-raise in poor position with mediocre holdings and 6 limpers in front of you.

- Don’t buy in for $50 in a 5/10 game. It’s pathetic. You want to build as big of a pot as possible once you're holding the nuts.

Last but not least, I suggest you play on a rakeback deal. You will play very few hands, somewhere between 20-40 an hour at one table. The ones you play though, will often reach maximum rake ($3). That's $15-$40 per hour just like that.

That's about it. Give it a try, it's a fun game.

On a different note, shame on Gus Hansen, Patrik Antonius and Johnny Chan for screwing up my WSOP fantasy team. Unfortunately, I didn't do my homework and track down all the blogs and stuff to figure out who's going to play a lot of the events. Gus doesn't have a bracelet yet and he's in my book one of the better tournament players out there. He also talked about the WSOP a couple times on gustv so I don't quite see why he didn't play any events so far.

As for Antonius, well I didn't believe he'd pass on the WSOP for the boring durrr challenge. Whatever floats his boat I guess.

Johnny Chan, I guess, doesn't really care about the 11th bracelet. I hoped he would go for it this year and be one of the few to have him on my team. Guess I should have picked Doyle instead, he's been playing well so far.

I think that is all for now.

Other posts from Horoeschio Blog:

Grinding the Omaha Hi/Lo tables

My SCOOP

Random Rant

Grinding the Omaha Hi/Lo tables

Besides playing the Sunday Majors on Pokerstars, that is what I'll be doing in the next couple weeks. I've played this game for the very first time in the FTOPS event a while back and besides losing two important flips, it was pure fun! I was fortunate enough to play with "the mouth" himself and I was definitely able to pick up a thing or two to add to my own game.

I'm really using a very basic strategy which happens to work just fine, so I'm probably only gonna change some small details here and there. The most important thing is the tight hand selection preflop. A lot of players, especially at the lower levels that I've played (.5/1), seem to forget that with a hand like , you don't necessarily want to see all the money in the middle since most of the time, you're only really going to have a shot at half the pot.

Here's an example on how a play like this can backfire:

PokerStars Game #28783924671: Omaha Hi/Lo Pot Limit ($0.50/$1.00) - 2009/05/30 7:14:42 ET

Now this hand comes not even close to some of the worst stuff I've seen but I think it shows the differences in hand selection between regular PLO and Hi/Lo pretty good.

I have also taken a shot at the 6-max tables but if you're a beginner, that's not really the best idea. The players there, especially at the higher limits (2/4), seem to play every hand and they're not afraid of shoving their stack with complete air either. I for one am certainly not ready to put up with maniacs like that just yet.

Also, if you're trying to clear a bonus, this is the game to play. The amount of VPP's (or whatever they are called) to be earned here is impressive.

Anyway .. so besides that, I've been playing nothing but the Sunday Majors on Stars. That is usually the warm up, followed by the 300k rebuy, the 200k (daily 80k) and the million. I might give the 500k a shot this Sunday because I finally got to adjust my game for the deepstack tournaments. I've been cashing quite a bunch of these in the past couple weeks and I feel that I'm definitely in for a deeper run. The cards haven't been coming my way in the important periods of the tournaments but if I keep playing well, I might take one down eventually.

Regarding the WSOP, I'm kinda rooting for Lex to win the 40k. He seems to be one of the few online pro's that doesn't come across as a complete immature dick. Next in line to win this thing would probably be Greg Raymer.

I think that is all.

Until next time,

- Mike

Other posts from Horoeschio Blog:

My SCOOP

Random Rant

FTOPS, Gus' fight and some random things

My SCOOP

Ever since I tied for first place in the 80k a couple weeks back, I was on an enormous losing streak of not cashing a single time for over 3 weeks. Even though I played more tourneys than ever before. Since I turn into a bitter SOB when I run bad, I decided not to write a new blog entry until I manage to crawl out of that hole.

So here I am. SCOOP is over and I'm quite happy about my performance.

Couldn't get much going in the first couple events which were the L&M NLHE 6-max with Rebuys, and the L&M NLHE 2nd Chance. The latter was kind of weird since I'm used to a free rebuy in these. Since I was steaming big time, I decided to call it a night without spending another $150 or whatever the buy in was.

Next came the Shootouts which I really like. Busted early in the L but managed to stay alive in the M after several beats such as getting Aces cracked by AK. Luckily he was a shortstack so I was still OK with 2.5k in chips (5k starting stack). I worked my way back up and eventually went heads up against a super loose player.

..
..
We started the second table with a stack of 50k each and I managed to take the chiplead of 64k with the turned nutflush against the opponent's top set. Unfortunately, I blew my stack in the very next hand with KK against 44 on a 4,3,8 flop and lost my last 15k later with AQ vs AK.
At the same time, I played the 6-max PLO 1R1A L&M. I took the chiplead early in the L but blew the M early because I was focusing too much on the Shootout. The fact that I just started playing PLO about 2 weeks ago probably didn't help either. I ended up finished in 162nd out of 4344 players which is totally acceptable.
Next in line was the 2-day NLHE event where I got off to a pretty decent start. I was quickly up to about 30k in both the L and the M. I proceeded to bust in both within 15 minutes. I don't feel like going through the hand history right now but I assure you, it wasn't pretty.
The HU isn't really worth mentioning as I lasted a whole 5 minutes. Kind of a pathetic performance there.
So .. what was next .. 6-max and 1R1A NLHE. Went down like anything hold'em at the moment. Needless to say I didn't cash in any of them.
Alright, now to the PLO .. boy was that a run. Busted early in the L and was off to a rough start in the M, catching lovely starting hands but failed to hit anything. Blew half my stack within the first hour but managed to get back in the second hour and never looked back. That was the most fun I ever had playing online poker. After roughly 11 hours of play, the FT was set and I was one of the 9 players remaining. I managed to outlast another 4 players with my shortstack and finished 5th for $19'209.50.
So now that I had achieved all my goals for this SCOOP (top 3 swiss players, make a FT, see my name in the prize money ranking), The pressure was gone for the Main events.
I played the L and M. Couldn't get much going in the first hour and slipped to 7k in both of them. But I guess that's what the deepstacks are for, right? So 3 hours later I found myself with decent stacks of 30k in the M and 80k in the L. I think I played REALLY good poker, re-raising a lot which is something I often fail to do.
Everything worked out perfectly until I made a stupid mistake in the M. Instead of re-raising the raise of the guy to my right in middle position, I just flat called with my AK. Flop came A,3,6 with 2 diamonds and he made kind of a small bet which I re-raised, basically committing myself to the pot. He moved all in and I eventually called. He showed 33 for the bottom set and I needed a backdoor FH to survive. The turn brought a K which left me with 4 outs but I didn't hit.
Meanwhile I made the money in the L and chipped up to almost 170k which was way above average at the time. I then ran my AQ into KK after flopping a Q which left me with 50k. Nothing was lost here as I would be right back in the game with a double up. I called a raise on the button with 9,T of diamonds and flopped two pair on a flop of A,9,T. He checked and I instantly shoved my last 40k with 20k being in the pot. I obviously wanted it to look like a steal in order for him to call with a mediocre hand. He did call with a weak Ace but turned his set which ended this one for me.
So in the end, I'm definitely happy about my performance. Hold'em still isn't going too well but except for that mistake in the main event, I think I played quite good.
Now I'm looking forward to play the FTOPS PLO events next month.
Until next time, hopefully with a post about a 1st place

Other posts from Horoeschio Blog:

Random Rant

FTOPS, Gus' fight and some random things

FTOPS XI Event #4 & #7

Random Rant

I don't know what's going on lately. I'm not having any fun playing poker at all.

I'm losing most coinflips which is not that big of a deal really .. it's poker, right? What annoys me as well are the constant bad beats whenever I make a good call. Someone's shoving from the SB and I call with my 7's in the BB.. He shows A,5 and turns the straight. I turn a straight for the nuts and the opponent rivers a full house. I could go on and on but most of you already went through this yourselves.

Last Sunday I played the 2.5 Million on Titan / Tony G. I was very shortstacked due to running card dead all night long except for the first hour. I finally picked up AQ and moved all in with my 5 BB's that I had left. The bigstack in the BB called and showed Q-10. With a double up there I might have very well been able to make it to the top 100 or further, but the turn showed a 10 and the river didn't change anything. Finished 132th. Sucked for a moment but again, this stuff happens and I sure can't blame him for calling. Made for a decent cash nonetheless since I satellited my way into it.

Now what's really killing me are the suckouts whenever I get outplayed. I played the Nightly 100k on Stars a couple days ago and was ready to take it deep. I raised in late position with K-Q and the player right next to me was the only caller. The flop brought nothing for both of us I guessed so I bet out after his check. He called and the turn brought a King. He checked again, I bet and he raised all in. I was thinking "damn not again" as a few hands before, I ran my turned set of 4's into a flopped set of Queens losing half my stack. I made the bad call and he showed Aces, having me totally dominated. The river brought a Queen for another lame suckout.

Unlike others, I'm not one to jump around like some moron and going "SHIPPPP IT SHIPPPPPPP IT" in the chatbox when I get rewarded for a bad play like this. I'd much prefer to get rewarded for my good decisions instead. None of these tough guys would have the guts to pull this crap in a live tournament. Trashtalking on the internet has got to be one of the most ridiculous things there is.

Anyway, I then once again proceeded to blow my stack with flopped two pair against a turned flush. This has been the rule lately.

I'll be playing the 1 Million on Full Tilt and the 250k on Titan this Sunday. If I still can't get anything together in these, I'm definitely in for a break until the SCOOP starts.

Rant over,
FTOPS, Gus' fight and some random things

It's time for a new blog entry. The plan was to wait until I have something positive to tell .. that's not really the case but I'll try to not whine as much as usual

I played a lot of FTOPS events and it didn't work out in any of them. Got Aces cracked several times, lost with the turned nuts, suffered some other bad beats, lost the important coinflips and in the last couple events, probably didn't play my A-game anymore.

Ever since I finished 26th in the big sunday tournament on Full Tilt a while back, I'm on a horrible run. I'm trying to get out of this hole but whenever I'm halfway out, I get kicked right in the face like this:

Stars obviously doesn't know that you don't beat someone lying on the ground already

On a different note, We watched Gus Hansens fight vs. Theo Jørgensen and it was brilliant. The show was so bad it was hilarious. There was a female moderator who would always forget to turn her microphone on (or they muted her, who knows) and when it did work, she would either laugh ridiculously for no reason or just make some weird noises .. I sure laughed my ass off. In the breaks, there were some danish rappers trying to make music. It probably doesn't get any worse than that.

Finally, the fight between Gus and Theo started.. Theo was obviously way better prepared. Gus didn't stand a chance even though the final result was only a 2:1 victory for Theo .. should have been more like a 10:0 but they probably didn't want to hurt Gus' feelings

On another note, I was recently asked to be a moderator on the international Pokernews forum. I was a bit surprised since there are other active members, which have been on the site a lot longer than me. I think their choice might have something to do with me being really awesome, but I'm not quite sure

Last but not least, after a short break we're back to playing the Pokernews for fun tourneys on Pokerstars. We only had 4 players this sunday which was really kinda lame so feel free to join us next sunday. Nowhere else do you get to play on such a high level for just 5 bucks

FTOPS XI Event #4 & #7

Yesterday, I played FTOPS event #7, a $109 NLHE rebuy tourney. I think I played pretty good, considering that I caught 5, maybe 6 hands in 4 hours.

I was sitting in the SB with an OK stack (around 20k, pretty much average) and looked down to AKc. A shortstacked player with about 5k left shoved in late position and I was going to call that immediately because I had seen him shoving with small Aces and pocket pairs before.

However, the button decided to re-raise all in for a bit over 20k. I thought about it for a bit and eventually decided to fold since I'd probably get into a coinflip situation at best and had not yet invested anything into the pot. I wanted to wait for a better spot to double up.

Unfortunately, the initial raiser showed A5o and the button pocket Tens. I would have won the pot as the turn brought a King.

That fold, along with some bad timing afterwards killed it for me. I raised with AJo in late position and a guy shoved as usual (happened 8 out of 10 times .. had Aces the other 2 times). I called and he showed Jacks, which held up.

In retrospect, I don't think the fold was that big of a mistake, although it really got me mad at this point, because I saw that I would have made the money easily with such a big stack. The point is, if his pocket Tens would've held up, things might have gone into a whole different direction.

For some reason, I can take bad beats ... bad decisions on my part, not so much. And at this time, I felt it was a horrible decision.

Oh yeah, I played the triple shootout event #4 earlier and got my Aces cracked by Queens about half an hour into the tournament. No big deal as I expected to either win my table or bust out early.

Anyways, I am feeling surprisingly good today and I'll definitely play the events #8 and #10. Would be about time for another cash

Other posts from Horoeschio Blog:

FTOPS XI Event #1

FTOPS XI

Wow, that was a cooler! And we're still not in the money. I tried to stay calm and managed to double up with Jacks vs. 7's a few hands later.

The goal was now to at least make the money. With 4 players to go, I picked up Queens in the SB. The button raised and I shoved hoping he wouldn't have an Ace or a King. He called with J,9 and I managed to double up once again.

For the last hour, I pretty much just tried to stay alive in order to pick up some more price money.

I lost the last coinflip with AK vs. 4's and finished in 367th place for $464.35

I'm quite satisfied with my play. God knows what could have happened if the Aces held up. Maybe next time.

Other posts from Horoeschio Blog:

FTOPS XI

After missing out on the last series, I decided to play most if not all of the NLHE events this time.

I plan on recording and analizing each event and writing a short summary on here, mainly to improve my game.

The list of tournaments that I'll participate in looks as followed:

Event #1 $200 + $16 NL Hold 'em $1,000,000 Guaranteed

Event #7 $100 + $9 NL Hold 'em Rebuy $500,000 Guaranteed

Event #8 $240 + $16 NL Hold 'em Knockout 6-max $600,000 Guaranteed

Event #9 $500 + $35 NL Hold 'em Heads Up $500,000 Guaranteed

Event #10 $300 + $22 NL Hold 'em $1,500,000 Guaranteed

Event #15 $200 + $16 NL Hold 'em Turbo 6-max $500,000 Guaranteed

Event #24 $120 + $9 NL Hold 'em Knockout $750,000 Guaranteed

Main Event $500 + $35 NL Hold 'em $2,500,000 Guaranteed

Depending on how I feel, I might be going to cancel one or two, since some of them start at 3am my time.
