Catching up
Saturday, May 10, 2008 13:53It’s been a while since my last entry; it’s been a very busy few weeks. Back in Buenos Aires I met up with a few Dutch guys that happened to be in town. One of them is Aasisdebaas from Everest poker, we had never met before but I’d spoken with him online a bit and he told me that he was traveling all over the world, and happened to be in the same city at the same time. He was traveling with his girlfriend, his brother and another friend. We saw a River Plate game at the stadium the first night but it was nothing compared to the Boca Juniors game that I went to with some Argentineans a couple of days after that.
Some shots of
my current living environmentThe Dutch had planned a trip to Iguazu and I decided to join them. Had it not been for the bad weather, it would have been absolutely amazing, but it was cloudy after the first day and the photos did not turn out as good as I hoped for because of that. Still, definitely a great trip and it’s really something that you should not miss when you’re in Latin America:
IguazuA couple of days later we went to Rio de Janeiro to play in the first Latin American Poker Tour. Everybody I talked with about Rio told me it was a beautiful city, and it really is true. I met two Swedes living in Buenos Aires over there, and did some of the touristy stuff with them. Just have a look at the pretty pictures:
Rio album 1 Rio album 2As for the LAPT itself, I had a pretty good streak that you can read all about on the PokerStars Blog (http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/lapt-rio-season-1/). I’ll write a detailed strategy-report on the event for PokerNews very soon, I played a couple of very interesting hands that I’ll discuss in it. In the meanwhile, have a look at this hand I played against TheCleaner:
Cleans me out again (hand history)A very important history with me and thecleaner here, is that the last time I saw him in real life, we talked about using overbets as bluffs in some situation where you know your opponent has a medium made hand but won’t lay it down for a regular-sized bet. This is really what prompted me to call here. Preflop I sometimes reraise but here I just called, because I thought at this point in the session I would still get a lot of respect for my reraises. It’s pretty easy for him to put me on a weak made hand here: I would always bet the turn with a king and if I was floating a QT Q9 type of hand I’ll probably also just check the turn like I would with a jack. The river is very unlikely to have hit me and he could still represent some strong hands with an overbet. He might have tried to checkraise the turn, or even have 55. All-in-all, a good spot for him to overbet bluff against any other player, but he knows that I know he thinks this way. So I should really just fold instead of talking myself into a call, but in the heat of the moment I did. He’d made a pretty sick valuebet with KT… He always seems to be getting the best of me.
