Tid-Bits at the WSOP

Thursday, June 26, 2008 10:43

Now that we are beyond the half waypoint at the WSOP, there are plenty of changes, incidents, and rumors to report. These are just a few of the “happenings” that have been reported and you may have missed.

Did you know, the cell phone rule has been changed? Unlimited texting is now allowed. If you wish to make a phone call or receive one, you still must move away from the table or your hand will be ruled dead. However, text away all you want!

A starting chip count change was announced in the late evening the night before the senior’s event. Even though the event was also a $1000 buy-in as was the ladies’ event, the seniors received 3000 in starting chips and the ladies only 2000.

The $50K HORSE players received a $100 food voucher, and all other events received $10. I guess HORSE players require more fuel.

Rumor has it that there was some controversy over a deal that was agreed upon between players in a mega satellite a few nights ago. It seems there were some over payments made, then immediately called back. The players in question refused to set the payouts right as agreed upon, and were promptly barred from playing any other events at this year’s WSOP. What kind of dummy would deliberately cheat and expect to still be an eligible player in the WSOP?

If you have a recognizable name in poker or perhaps you are a celebrity, you too can enjoy a specially prepared meal from one of the better restaurants in the Rio and enjoy your dinner table side while you play. Better yet, you can have a television of your own set up near your table to watch the Lakers game! I on the other hand, do not rate this special treatment! Gee, wonder who does?

During a recent event dinner break several floor staff was observed discussing card setups. Because of the discussion, some decks of cards were collected and replaced. Perhaps the very experienced floor staff noticed something not quite right and took action. Kudos to the floor staff for being so efficient!

The PokerNews staff has been working over time to bring all the internet viewers the blow by blow action as quickly and accurately as they possibly can. If you haven’t ventured around the PokerNews site for many of the special features available to users such as the Shout Box and the members Blogs, please do so.
Keep it up guys and gals, you’re doing a fantastic job!

Fascinating to learn the Seniors got 3K in chips for the same entry as the Ladies.....and happy to hear they were watching the cards and changed them as needed. Elite tableside service with TV?? Hmmmm....pretty sure this wouldn't have happened at Binion's.....

Thanks for keeping us on the sidelines totally up to date! Love reading your blog EVERY am!

What you fail to mention is that the Seniors getting an extra 1K in starting chips was a direct result of so many players in the Ladies' Event complaining to Harrah's officials about the short starting stacks in that event and the lack of actual poker play that comes with it. Rather than wait a year to implement the change, they decided to do it as soon as possible.

So, no sexism involved in that decision. If there was, you bet your ass I'd have published a 3,000-word rant on that a week ago!
