What's Important About Picking a Poker Site??
July 30, 2007I posted this in the forum and want to post it here too. The more opinions that I get, the better.
Just want to throw a question out there to get varying opinions. Is it better to find one poker site and play strictly on it (learning the site, earning player points, making friends, etc..) or move from site to site (taking advantage of bonuses, various tourneys, structures)?
Just want to get some opinions. I'm working on a guide to picking a poker site and want to know what other players think. (rather than just my opinion)
Any comments would be appreciated.

More on Duplicate Poker
July 27, 2007I played a few tourneys tonight. Made it past the 1st round on most but only won one. This could be a very interesting game. For anybody that doesn't know what Duplicate Poker is, it's a game where you are competing against other players that are sitting in the same position on other tables. They are getting the same cards as you and same flops. You play a set number of hands per round. Then the field is cut. You don't go out if you go all in and lose. You're net total just goes negative. So sometimes it's not nly how much you win but how little you lose.
What distracts from the game is some people insist on going all in on EVERY hand, regardless of what they have. If you have someone on your table doing this and outdrawing you when the other tables don't have this, you are doomed. There's not much you can do. Call and hope that you can hit the most flops is your only play.

July 27, 2007Decided I'll give Duplicate Poker a shot. I like the theory behind the game AND getting in the PokerNews Freerolls for depositing only $20, how can I lose??? I'll blog later on how it goes.

Running Bad with Good Play
July 26, 2007Well, I haven't posted in a few days. Guess I've been busy trying to lose my deposit on Wingows. Sklanky's Theory of Poker says that anytime you play the same as if you knew your opponents hole cards or if they play differently than they would if they knew yours, then you've played well. With that in mind, I've played almost perfectly. I've just been outdrawn. I'm running bad but not playing bad.
For example, when holding
, I get 
on the flop. I make a pot sized bet but get reraised all-in. I didn't put my opponent on KK so I call. My opponent shows 
. I've got him dominated. Turn comes 
. River comes 
. Now, if I KNEW my opponent had hit a set of 8's, I would have played the hand EXACTLY the same. I played correctly. If my opponent KNEW that I had hit a set of 10's, there's no way he'd play it the way that he did.
Poker is about getting your money in the middle when you have the best of it and keeping as much as possible out when you don't. I did that. I just listed one example, but there were many. I have to tell myself that as long as I continue playing well, the tides will turn, statistics will win, and my current streak will reverse itself.

PokerNews Freerolls on WingowsPoker.com
July 21, 2007The PokerNews freeroll on WingowsPoker.com was just canceled. There were 23 players signed up but Wingows placed a minimum of 50 players required to hold the tournament. So Wingows canceled it. This ticks me off.
I understand that this is a business decision. Wingows was willing to host these tournaments in order to increase their traffic. They assumed that PokerNews players would download Wingows by the hundreds thus increasing their traffic by over 10%. But......they were wrong. Apparently there were only 23 of us PokerNewsers with WingowsPoker accounts that wanted to qualify for the PokerNews Cup Main Event. But that's just the way that it is.
Does this mean that the next 2 PokerNews Freerolls on WingowsPoker will have the same restrictions?? If that's the case, I look for the same results....cancellation. I played the WSOP Main Event PokerNews Freeroll on Wingows and there was actually about the same turn out. Wingows had loaded all players that had downloaded on PokerNews so the starting number of players was higher but there were 7-8 players sitting out at every table. The real number was close to the same as tonight's turn-out.
Now, what do we do?? I guess the 23 of us that were qualified are just S.O.L. Sure, there's always next time but like I said, I don't expect different results then either.
The funny thing is.....I actually LIKE the site. Sure, its' low traffic but the cash games and tournaments are rather soft. I've increased my deposit over 5X and I'm actually playing in the $1000 Weekly Guaranteed tournament while I'm typing this.

July 21, 2007Today is the day of one of the PokerNews Freerolls on WingowsPoker.com. So since I'm thinking about this freeroll, I figured I'd give my opinion on all freerolls.
A lot of players are idiots. I understand when you're playing a $25 freeroll and the 1st place money is $5, manic play is to be expected. Nothing invested and very little to gain. However, when it's for a $12k package or a $5k package (as it is today), people should play like they would in the actual event. Initially, this is usually not the case. There are still those players that feel that the all-in is their only move.
I know, I know. All you have to do is wait until you have THE hand and call them. Well, there is no unbeatable hand. So it doesn't matter if you wait for those pocket aces or kings to call them. You're still at risk. And since they don't seem to care about their chips, the inevitable "bad-beat" can head your way. Now, I'm not talking about the calling stations. I'm talking about those players that raise any pot with action (and some without action) to all-in. This takes the skill out of poker and makes it like playing the slot machine. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. This is generally a good strategy only when you are out-classed at the table with better players. Maybe you can get lucky and knock a "good" player out of the running.
Not really a point to this post other than to go ahead and get some aggression off my mind before it's freeroll time. I really want to do well but I never have any luck at slot machine poker. Hopefully today will be different.Read more: Freerolls

July 20, 2007OK, I'm not going to do the normal PartyPoker bashing that seems to run rampant in forums and blogs. It's funny how everybody bashes them BUT everybody has played there. Anyway, I'm simply going to tell my experience on PartyPoker.
A few years ago, I got interested in online poker. I grew up playing cards. My family played poker along with spades, hearts, canasta, rummy, and gin. I played poker some while I was in the military but nothing serious. Being a minimum of 4 hours drive from a casino, online poker offered my a legitimate way to play regularly without the driving hassle.
Googling "online poker" brought up an ad by PartyPoker so what the heck, I downloaded it. I decided that I'd play the free games. That should be entertaining. And it was. For awhile. When I got up to 14,000,000 in my play money account on Party, it was turning a bit boring and I was feeling pretty confident about playing real money games.
I was concerned about the legitimacy of online poker though. When looking at the deposit options, I didn't feel comfortable linking my bank account to a poker site. So I had an idea. I opened a separate bank account to use ONLY for poker. I hooked up with Neteller and was ready to go.
My 1st deposit was for $100. I did this on a Friday night. I didn't really get to play much that night but I was eagerly anticipating Saturday. My day was clear and it was "poker time". I started on a $0.25-$0.50 NL table. From the start, I was on fire. It seemed like anything and everything that I played hit on the flop, made the straight, or rivered me a flush. I played for over 8 hours that day. I moved up a couple of times and finally ended up on the $2-$4 NL tables. That $100 deposit had grown to over $1000 and thoughts of retiring from my regular job crossed my mind. That was Day 1.
Day 2-Sunday-the fire went out. I played exactly how I had played the day before but with opposite results. For every AA, there was a KK flop. Every open ended straight stayed open. For every
, there was a 
flop, 
turn and on and on. Nothing went right. I started on a $2-$4 NL table and worked my way down. I'd lose my buy-in then move down in stakes. Lose it again. Move down again. Finally, as I neared $200, I decided that I had endured enough that day. Well, a week later, that deposit was totally gone.
I'd seen it grow by playing aggressively loose and I'd seen it shrink by playing the exact same way. I decided at that point that I needed to do a little reading and studying of the game. Online Poker Etiquette
July 19, 2007I'm not a writer. I'm a normal online poker player that is just tired of the rude and obnoxious behavior at the tables during online poker games. So I decided that I'd give some rules that everybody could benefit by if everyone followed.
Rule #1- Cursing. There should be no cursing at the table. I don't care how you have to misspell it to get the site to accept the word. There's no need for it. It simply shows a lack of intelligence or maturity if you can't express yourself without cursing. You never know who is playing. You're not impressing anybody at the table with your mistyping ability.
Rule #2- Criticizing. Do not criticize other players' play. I don't care what they drew to beat you. If you want to make money, you WANT the fish to continue to play that way. They may also be setting you up to THINK that they are fish so they can shark you for the evening.
Rule #3- Delaying. Don't delay the flow of the game. While I understand multi-tabling, you shouldn't disrupt play at the tables that you are on. If it's taking you the full time allowed (or close to it), you're taking to long. If everyone took the full 30 seconds, it would take 5 minutes per hand. Ridiculous.
Rule #4- Chatting. If you like to chat (and many do), that's fine. Many people (including myself) have made friends with other players on different sites. But keep your chat clean (see Rule #1). If you don't like to chat or to see others chat messages, turn off that player's chat. Most sites offer this option. There's no reason to complain about players chatting. Also, if your chatting, pay attention to the game. That's the reason you're online. If it's not, go to a chat room. Additionally, all chat needs to be in the language of the site. Most poker sites say chat English only so all chat needs to be in English. It may be inconvenient but this protects against collusion.
Rule #5- "Dating"- Poker sites are not dating sites. Just because there is a female on your table (or you think there is) doesn't open the door to the dating service. Leave the woman alone. She wants to play some poker just like you.
Rule #6- NH (Nice Hand)- If you feel someone made a nice play, type NH or NB (Nice Bet). People (probably including you) want to have good plays recognized. BUT, you don't need to type NH EVERY hand that is won. If I raise the blinds and everybody folds, it wasn't a nice hand (especially if I had AA).
Well, there are the rules that I can think of right now. If I think of more, I'll add to this list. If anybody else can think of any, please feel free to comment.

Introduction
July 19, 2007Guess I really should introduce myself. I'm a 41 year old plant manager who's still wondering what I'm going to be when I grow up. (I keep pulling for poker player but so far it just looks like I'll just be old)
Don't get me wrong. I've got the wife that I love dearly. She is SUPER supportive on the poker. I've got 2 kids that I wouldn't trade for anything (but at times I'll entertain offers). I do the "right" and "responsible" things to take care of my responsibilities as a husband and a father. I never gamble with money that should have gone to bills or anything else. But I'm lucky enough to have an income that can support my family AND support some poker too.
I play online almost every day. I play 4+ hours per session. I've played way too many online sites. I started (like most) on PartyPoker and drifted from there. Then the US govt decided to really limit how many sites I could play on (actually the sites did). I had found a few I liked before then. Then it was back to drifting. In the future, I'll give my opinion of some of these sites and my experiences.

$0.25-$0.50 Ring Game- Quick hit for $18 while waiting for Tourneys to start.
Don't like to hit and run but wasn't in the mood for multi-tabling.
Need to continue with the results and play this well Saturday in the PokerNews Freeroll.
