1st Time Playing "Real" Poker
July 18, 2007The first time I ever played poker in a poker-room was actually not even in a casino. Ebro Greyhound Track in Florida has a card room where they spread limit poker at the time. I walked in with knees knocking. It's a bit intimidating that 1st time. I asked the cashier what the customary buy-in was. They told me $100-$300 so (not wanting to look like the novice that I was) I bought in for $300.
I was shown to my table and I sat down. The first hand dealt, I flopped 2 pair. In the excitement, I pushed all-in. Not a smart move when you're playing limit and you'd like some callers. Needless to say, I didn't get any. From there, I played like I'd been off the farm for at least 1 week, or maybe even longer:-].
An older gentleman in seat 8 (I was in seat 4), kept raising EVERY hand, EVERY round. After I watched him for awhile, I realized that his raises meant nothing. He may have something and he may have rags. It was simply a matter of waiting until I hit few flops and it was on. I finished the night (3 hours later) up $400+. When I told my wife about it, she thought that I should have felt sorry for the old man. "I'd take his Social Security check if he brought it to the table"
So, not a bad night the 1st time playing "real" poker. I knew I was hooked. But that's for another time.
