Last weekend, after I flew into Atlanta from Vegas and drove home on Thursday, I got up Friday morning and drove down to Biloxi Mississippi (4.5 hours) to play in a preliminary event in the IP Classic. This was a $340 buy-in with $75,000 guaranteed prize money. 416 players signed up. Chris Moneymaker was "contracted" by the casino to play in the tourney and there was a bounty on his head. But that's another post.....

I knew it was going to be a pretty good day when I went to my seat assignment. I was seated in the outer room right at the top of the escalator. I know that sounds strange but unfortunately I'm a smoker and the whole 3rd floor at the IP is smoke-free. A couple of times, when I wasn't involved in a hand, I'd ride the escalator down and then back up smoking all the way and not even miss a hand. My table was also the 1st to get off the 3rd floor during breaks. But back to tourney play.....

Early in the tourney, I look down at {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}. I raise 4x BB and get one caller. Flop comes {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. Player checks and I bet out 5x BB and he calls. Turn comes {3-Diamonds}. He checks again and I bet the same 5x BB and again he calls. River comes {K-Spades} so I'm good unless he flopped quads. He checks to me and I say, "I bet the rest". Without thought I get the call and he turns over {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} for three 9's. He had me until the river but let me catch up. So an early double up and I was looking pretty good.

Eventually, enough tables broke and I was moved to the main room. I played one hand poorly. I looked down at {7-Spades}{8-Spades} and raised 3x BB. I get one caller, a solid player that I've played against before. Flop comes {6-Spades}{5-Spades}{J-Diamonds} so I'm open-ended with a straight flush draw. I bet out 3x BB and opponent raises to 6x BB. I call. Turn comes {A-Hearts}. Here's my mistake, I check. Opponent checks. River comes {3-Clubs}. We check it and opponent shows {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}. With a move on the turn, I would have taken the pot. But hindsight is 20/20. I'm short stacked after that hand. Blinds are 200-400 and I'm down to 1150 chips. Time to chip up or be done.

The next round, I looked down at and ace 4 hands in a row. Each time, I pushed all in. I stole the blinds the first 3x and doubled up on the 4th. I never looked at the other card until I was called and had {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} that time so I'm back over 6000 chips. I then went on an incredible rush. In less than 1.5 hours, I'm up to over 50,000 chips.

I get average cards for the next few hours. My stack slowly grows to just over 70,000 when we get down to 37 players with the tourney paying 36. We all agree to chip in $10 each for 37th so that everyone is in the money and play will proceed a little quicker.

We play down to 10 and move to one table. 9 being the official final table. I mentioned this in a forum post already. I had finished 10th in a preliminary WSOP Circuit event a couple of months ago and I was determined to make the "official" final table. 2nd mistake--I get {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. UTG raises. I toss 'em. UTG gets one caller and loses to {Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts} with his {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} when it flops {Q-Hearts}. So I would have taken the hand and been in a better chip position.

I then went card dead. Not a good time for that. Blinds are 6000-12000 with 1000 ante so each round costs 32000 chips. Tournament director made a mistake also. At the end of the level, he "forgot" to announce to the dealer the new blinds of 8000-16000 with 1000 ante. Technically, everybody was short stacked so this was a painful mistake for me. He remembers to raise the blinds when I'm UTG so they don't miss me. Blinds went by with me tossing my {9-Clubs}{3-Hearts}, {6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, {8-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, etc. I finally look down at {K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. I've been blinded down to 18,000 chips so I push. SB and BB call as they should. I go out against {4-Hearts}{2-Spades} because BB rivered {2-Diamonds}.Knockout

Well, not as good as I would have liked but a payday of over $3,400 wasn't bad.:-]
