The New World of Poker
August 03, 2007The New World of Poker
I have proof of what I have thought (for some time now) is the reason for the rash of "Bad Beats" and "Suck Outs" in the "New World of Poker" (By new I mean the last 4-5 years)
The new players that have made the move to internet poker and local card rooms, have larger bankrolls!!
Think about it. When the "World Poker Tour" started bringing in the masses, a lot of the people that came in were people that would never have gone to a "Card Room". It was considered back then, that it could be dangerous, and the games weren't honest! Not to mention, the "Shady Characters". But thanks to TV, the mentality started changing.
EVERYONE used to think internet poker was somehow crooked!! But when the subject came up, over and over on TV, slowly but surely it became trust worthy. These new people that are just, "checking things out", aren't playing in big games, no they play in small games (2-4, 3-6, 1-2 no limit), but they have large bankrolls. - -Whats the result?? Someone bets $2- $4 or $10, they CALL!!!! Slowly they move up in limits, but the fact remains, $10-$20, $100 - $500, no big deal! Lets have some fun!! - - - - So they play average cards, see many flops, and make risky calls. The results(??), a whole new world of SUCK OUTS and bad beats!!
All along books are coming out, poker is all over the TV, more and more doctors, lawyers, accountants and various corporate types start studying, buying videos and giving it a try. - - - The fact is, bigger and bigger "Bankrolls" start coming in.
The proof I mentioned at the beginning is myself. I played in the $200,000 guarantee at "Full Tilt" recently (actually a few months ago), I took 19th (or 17th??) and made $906. BUT instead of cashing out most of it, I let it sit. - - This may be a flaw in my thinking process, but I honestly felt a little different. I started playing with a little different attitude. Made some calls I wouldn't of normally and just in general didn't have any pressure, and I kept winning!! - - - I eventually cashed out most of the funds, but the point is I DID feel somewhat different while playing medium size games with money I wasn't worried about behimd me!! - - - -
My contention is, a large percentage of the "New Players" don't need to win a big pot or place in a tournament. They come into the game with large bankrolls their not worried about losing !!! - - - - They just want to have some fun!!!
